Chow chow (chayote) chutney is a healthy and spicy side dish that goes well with dosa and rice. It is easy and simple to make in a few minutes.

Health Benefits of Chayote:

Chayote is a healthy fruit that is low in calorie, fat, and cholesterol. It is light green in color that resembles a pear fruit, it is slightly bigger in size compared to the pear fruit. It is an excellent source of Vitamin C and fiber. It is widely used in Mexican and Indian cuisine.

Smart Cooking Tips:

1. Cook the tomatoes thoroughly until soft and mushy before grinding otherwise chutney would taste raw tomato smell.

2. You can add a little amount of tamarind or tamarind paste for a nice tangy taste.

Chayote is widely used in Indian cooking. It is known as chow chow in South India. Chow chow kootu, chow chow sambar and chow chow poriyal are the popular Indian recipes using Chayote.

Chow Chow Chutney

Chow chow (chayote) chutney is a healthy and spicy side dish that goes well with dosa and rice. It is easy and simple to make in a few minutes.

  • 1 no Chayote (Chow Chow)
  • 1 cup Onion Chopped
  • 2 no Tomatoes
  • 1 tsp Urad Dal
  • 1 tbsp Toor Dal
  • 4 no Dry Red Chilies
  • 1 tsp Coriander Powder
  • 2 tbsp Oil
  1. Wash, peel, discard the seed and chop the chayote into small chunks. 

  2. In a pan, heat oil, add urad dal, toor dal, dry red chilies and cook until the dals color changes to golden brown. Add chopped onion and cook until the onion becomes soft.

  3. Add chayote, tomatoes, coriander powder, salt and cook until the chayote and tomatoes become soft. Allow to cool and grind it to a smooth chutney. Chow chow chutney is ready to serve.

How to serve chayote chutney?

Serve chayote chutney with rice or dosa.
