Gongura Shrimp (Gongura Royyalu)

Gongura shrimp (gongura royyalu) is an easy, flavorful and delicious side dish that goes well with rice and roti. Shrimp cooked with spices and gongura (sorrel) leaves.

Gongura is a healthy green leafy vegetable. It is also known as sorrel. It is widely used in Indian Andhra cuisine. Because of its unique sour taste, it is used in many dishes like Gonuga Pappu, Gongura Pachadi, Gongura Pickle, Gongura Mutton, and Gongura chicken are the popular recipes using gongura leaves. You can find gongura leaves in the Indian grocery store.

It is an excellent source of Vitamins, Folic acid, Calcium, Minerals, and Iron.

Smart Cooking Tips:

  1. Avoid cooking the gongura leaves for a longer time. Overcooking tends to lose its nutrients.

A flavorful seafood dish:

Gongura shrimp is also known as gongura royyalu. Shrimp cooked with the gonngura leaves gravy. This dish tastes spicy and mildly tangy taste from the gongura leaves. The gongura leaves give a beautiful color to the dish. It is a delicious side dish that goes well with the rice varieties, chapati, and dosa. Sambar rice and gongura royyalu is my favorite combo.

Gongura shrimp (gongura royyalu) is an easy, flavorful and delicious side dish that goes well with rice and roti. Shrimp cooked with spices and gongura (sorrel) leaves.

  • 1 lb Shrimp
  • 1 bunch Gongura Medium Size
  • 2 no Green Chilies
  • 4 tbsp Oil
  • 1 tsp Red Chili Powder
  • 1 tbsp Coriander Powder
  • 0.50 tsp Turmeric Powder
  • 1 tsp Ginger Garlic Paste
  • 1 tsp Garam Masala
  • 1 tsp Salt (to taste)
  1. Rinse and clean the gongura leaves thoroughly in water. In a pan, heat oil, add gongura leaves, green chilies, and cook until the gongura leaves shrinks. Let it cool and grind to a smooth paste in a blender/mixer.
  2. In a pan, heat oil, add chopped onion and cook until the turns soft.

  3. Add turmeric powder, ginger garlic paste and cook until the ginger garlic paste loses its raw smell.

  4. Add shrimp, red chili powder, coriander powder and cook until the shrimp gets cooked thoroughly. It takes 5 to 6 minutes depending on the size of the shrimp.

  5. Add the grounded gongura paste, garam masala and mix well. Gongura shrimp (Gongura Royyalu) is ready to serve.

Serve gongura shrimp as a side dish with rice or roti.
